Using Rice Water For Your Hair – As a haircare product, rice water originated in Japan as a rinse. It is now utilized by women worldwide in a variety of forms, including its original form. Rice water is extremely mild, and the likelihood of an adverse reaction is low; however, you should monitor your hair and scalp for signs of dryness.

  • Dr. Zeichner recommends using it as a rinse following shampooing. “After shampooing hair, massage rice water into the hair and scalp for 5 to 10 minutes. Consider it a primer for your hair
  • you can apply it and then, if necessary, use your regular conditioner “He clarifies.
  • Create your own shampoo or conditioner from scratch: Those with dry hair or scalps may wish to avoid direct application of rice water. According to Dr. Williams, “it can have a drying effect on the hair and scalp, so individuals with dry scalp should limit its use and mix it with shampoo, conditioner, or oils for additional hydration and lubrication.”
  • Apply as a nourishing treatment: Both Dr. Williams and Flowers recommend leaving the rice water on for an extended period of time prior to rinsing in order to maximize absorption of its nutrients. Dr. Williams explains “If you want to experience the anti-inflammatory properties of rice water for the scalp, apply it directly to the scalp after shampooing and conditioning the hair. Allow it to sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.” Flowers shares this sentiment “After cleansing and conditioning the hair, the rice water can be poured through the scalp or placed in a spray bottle and applied directly to the scalp. I recommend leaving it on the scalp for at least 30 minutes for proper absorption. You can also massage your scalp for maximum absorption, and then rinse.”

How often should rice water be applied?

Method – If you’re only performing a rice water rinse, don’t allow the rice to become too sticky, or the consistency will be too thick. This method is for my modified rice water treatment.Bring the rice to a boil while stirring until the water becomes cloudy, creamy, and thick.

This requires roughly 20 minutes on a medium-high heat. You want the rice to absorb nearly all of the liquid. Once the rice has absorbed the majority of the water and appears almost gummy, it is cooked. Remove from the saucepan and press gently through a sieve to extract the thick, creamy, sticky water.

NOTE: Only the thick, creamy, and watery gloop should pass through the sieve – NOT the rice!!! If not, you will have rice in your hair. Typically, I must scrape the rice water ‘gloop’ off the bottom of the sieve and into the bowl below. Add either a teaspoon or a tablespoon of your preferred conditioner or deep conditioner, and combine to create a hair mask with a creamy consistency.

  1. Depending on the desired strength of the rice water treatment, the ratio of rice water gloop to deep conditioner varies.
  2. Apply the modified rice water rinse mask to your hair from the ends up, after cleansing or clarifying your hair as usual.
  3. Bring it all the way up and massage it into the scalp if you wish to promote hair growth and/or are experiencing scalp issues.

Including a dry, itchy, flaky, irritated, sensitive, oily, or greasy scalp. If you are unfamiliar with protein treatments or hesitant, begin by leaving it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Gradually increasing the time to 20 to 30 minutes, but never exceeding one hour.

Utilize a Curl Maven Thermal Heat Cap for optimal outcomes. If your hair is particularly dry or damaged, do not completely rinse out the treatment. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water until milky-colored water runs out of the ends, then style as usual. Rice water should not be used more than once per week, and it should not be used as a leave-in spray.

Too much rice water, when applied too frequently or left on the hair for too long, can cause damage. I’m a single mother with two children, so I don’t have time for a full wash day that includes multiple rice water rinses, a deep condition, and then my usual styling! Therefore, by utilizing this modified rice water treatment, I am saving time and maximizing the benefits of both the rice water and the deep conditioner.
