Must jasmine rice be rinsed before cooking?
It is NOT necessary to rinse rice!! This article dispels the idea that washing rice is necessary for fluffy rice. Absolutely NOT! I have prepared so much rice in my time validating this precise reality. Here’s my knowledge: Even without rinsing, your jasmine rice will be fluffy if you use 1 1/4 glasses of water for 1 cup of rice.
If you rinse the rice, you must subtract 2 teaspoons of water to account for the additional water that stays in the rice (1 1/4 cups water minus 2 tablespoons). If you rinse AND soak for one hour, you must lower the amount of water by three tablespoons (1 1/4 cups minus three tablespoons). Compared to not washing, rinsing results in a scarcely detectable improvement in fluffiness.
It would not be obvious to the majority of people; Only rinse if you get your rice directly from a rice farm or a comparable source in order to eliminate debris and any residue from processing; and No need to sanitize retail purchases – If you purchase rice in plastic packages from the shop, it should already be clean and have less starch.
- Let’s face it.
- Rinsing rice is difficult.
- For an additional 2% fluffiness, it is simply not worthwhile (in my humble opinion).
- If you must rinse rice to clean it, if you simply cannot break the habit, or if your Asian mother would have your head if you didn’t, here’s how: Put rice in a bowl and fill it with water.
Hand-swirl, then drain. Repeat three or four times; water will never be totally transparent. Drain in a colander and cook as instructed.
Culinary uses Steamed jasmine rice is ideal for eating with stir fries, with grilled, fried, or braised food items, and in soups (when cooked slightly drier by adding a little less water during cooking). It often does not fare well when used for fried rice, as it is too soft and soggy when still warm.
