Mallards, pintails, teal, and geese will travel great distances to reach a Wild Rice Marsh. In the autumn, they will find ripened seeds that have fallen into the water, as well as a hiding place among the tall growth of the Wild Rice plant. A pond containing Wild Rice will provide permanent food for waterfowl.

It grows best in ponds with some water movement, such as an inlet, an outlet, or springs. If the pond has more than 3 acres of surface water, there is typically sufficient wind to keep the rice growing.
The suggested rate of planting is 25 to 40 pounds per acre. It depends on how thick you want the first year’s growth to be. The seed is strewn across the surface of the water to plant it. Naturally, the seed will sink to the bottom. We recommend using a tree branch or a rake to lightly cover the seed with the underlying soil. Wild Rice will have a distinct odor, but it is not spoiled. When is the optimal time to plant rice?

Most plant species prefer warm climates. Therefore, rice should be planted after the last frost has passed, in early spring or March.
Look for a warm, sunny location with rich, well-drained soil. Or, place a container in a garden area that meets these specifications. Plant rice from indoor-started transplants or from seeds. Start seeds indoors six to eight weeks prior to the planting date. Once the seedlings are ready for transplanting, place them in 8-inch-wide rows in the garden bed.
You can also grow rice in containers instead of a garden bed. Large planters with consistently moist soil are ideal for upland varieties. Lowland varieties thrive in 5-gallon buckets with soil at the bottom and water on top. No drainage is required. Try starting rice seeds directly in a container indoors and transplanting them outdoors when they are mature.
